GLAD Information

CARE is reaching out to Greek-Letter Organizations nationwide, both at the national and chapter levels, to form relationships with them so that they can have easy and effective ways to provide important personal finance information to their members, especially their student members.

This initiative was conceived by Dwayne Murray, Esq., a Chapter 7 Trustee in Louisiana, who is also a Director of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees and a National Officer of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Through Dwayne’s extraordinary efforts, he has obtained a commitment from the Council of Presidents for the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. to work with CARE on this initiative, and he has been the moving force behind a CARE Program that will take place on March 14, 2007 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

At the suggestion of Frankie Heyward, Vice President of Nu Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at the University of Delaware, we have named this initiative GLAD (Greeks Learning to Avoid Debt).

As relationships develop, we hope that national fraternities and sororities will post various CARE materials, including its Top 10 Tips for High School and College Students, and CARE-related articles on their Web sites, as well as a link to the CARE Web site. This basic personal finance information will then be available to all members, especially local chapters who can then download the materials and disseminate them to their student members at the chapter level.

In addition, we hope that local chapters will sponsor credit information CARE presentations at schools or in areas where CARE has a local presence.

As national and local relationships develop, CARE expects that Greeks will contribute many new and creative ideas and materials that can be posted on the CARE Web site as well as on national and chapter Web sites, all of which will make the GLAD initiative more effective and successful.

GLAD%201.jpgThis link will also includes a photo/quote section where we will post photos of Greeks who provide us with quotes or essays about personal finance experiences, reasons why Greek-Letter Organizations, national and local, should become involved with the GLAD initiative and/or important things they learned from the CARE Web site or from participation in a GLAD event.

David J. Kozlowski, Esq., a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and a Confidential Law Clerk to Bankruptcy Judge John C. Ninfo, II, the founder of the CARE Program, has prepared this assessment of How CARE Helps Fraternities and Sororities for consideration by Greek-Letter Organizations.

On March 13 and 14, 2007, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and its Theta Nu Chapter at the University of Louisiana sponsored CARE events throughout the Western District of Louisiana.

These events to promote CARE in Louisiana and to advance CARE’s GLAD initiative were co-sponsored by the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Louisiana.

Through the extraordinary efforts of the members of Kappa Alpha Psi, in these two days CARE presentations were made at Lafayette and Northside high schools and at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, fraternity and CARE Program representatives appeared on two early morning television programs, and newspaper articles covering these events appeared in the Louisiana Daily Advisor and The Vermilion, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus newspaper.

By arranging these community events, in addition to the GLAD events at the University, the Theta Nu Chapter demonstrated how chapters of Greek-Letter Organizations can fulfill community service requirements by working with CARE Programs to bring CARE presentations into local high schools.

Please help make the GLAD Initiative a success in its efforts to help insure that members of Greek-Letter Organizations increase their Financial IQ’s and live financially successful and profitable lives. If you have suggestions on how to make this link or the GLAD Initiative better, email us at careprogram@nywb.uscourts.gov.
